Northwest of Dallas and south of Denton sits Flower Mound, Texas. It is located in South Central Denton County on Grapevine Lake and although it was once a great farming and cattle community it has evolved into a large suburban community. And although it is a city it likes to call itself the Town of Flower Mound to help exude its small town feel.
The Name of the City
Few names of cities make you wonder what it was based on, but Flower Mound, Texas does just that. The common belief is that a large privately owned mound that rests in the southern part of the city was an Indian burial ground. The city is growing up around and this mound and it remains as is. So, the city was named Flower Mound.
Population and Growth of Flower Mound
The 2000 census found that Flower Mound had 50,702 residents. However, growth has continued since then and many believe the number is closer to 70,000. The growth began in the '90s when a 13% growth per year was seen. Many hoped the growth would slow and some efforts were made to do so, but Flower Mound's location does not lend itself well to stifled growth. Being north of the Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport and with such close proximity to the big cities Flower Mound will more than likely continue growing for years to come.
Flower Mound Real Estate
Flower Mound real estate has seen some growth like many other cities near Dallas/Ft. Worth over the past few years. When the census was taken in 2000 there were 1105 new single family dwelling permits issued at an average cost of $248,700. In 2004 only 411 permits were issued at an average cost of $294,200.
Flower Mound Schools
In general Flower Mound is part of the Lewisville Independent School District. Three other school districts service part of Flower Mound as well and these include Argyle Independent School District, Denton Independent School District, and Northwest Independent School District. The Flower Mound High School and the Edward S. Marcus High School are both in Flower Mound and part of the Lewisville School District.
The Small Town Atmosphere
Despite its continued growth Flower Mound is doing its best to maintain its small town image and feel. Who knows how big the city will get before the small town feel wears off, but if it is left up to the people of Flower Mound that will never happen.
