Dallas became a city on February 2, 1856 although it had been founded fifteen years earlier in 1841 by John Neely Bryan. The name of the city is debatable in its origin. Some believe it is after the Vice President of the United States during this time period, George Mifflin Dallas. However, Bryan states he named the city after his friend Dallas and although speculated the true origin is not known.
